About us
Yarnia is a small family business , run by me, Hilde, who is the yarn enthusiast, and my husband, Gurdeep, who has set up the shop and a few other things.
I have knitted and crocheted since I was a little girl. Since there have been other things like weaving and spinning. It is not that long ago I began to spin and dye both yarn and fiber. I wanted to learn how to spin ever since I was a teenager and lived in the Faroe Islands. I thought it was so sad that all the wool was just burned because the farmer didn't get enough payed that it was worthwhile doing anything else with it. I was well acquainted with the Faroese yarn when I lived there and used it a lot. But in Norway it was difficult to get the yarn I liked best, namely Snældan. One thing is that it is perfect for baby clothing because of the lanolin, but it is also very nice in multi colored patterns and is very soft after washing.
For about 10 years ago, I began to study part time while working full time. As if that wasn't enough, I have also had several children in the midst of this. Then I took a conscious decision that crochet hooks and knitting needles would be shelved for a while. I had to have steel discipline to be able to get through work, study and family. It lasted for several years, with very few exceptions during vacation and pregnancy. After I finished my bachelor's degree, I had suddenly a lot of free time. The needles was dug up again and I have gone crazy with yarn and fiber. And so it has continued. I started blogging a little, discovered www.ravelry.com and missed Snældan from the Faroe Islands. The only option was to get family, friends and acquaintances to send to me. Also there were several who have contacted me and wanted to know how they could get hold of the yarn. After a lot of hassle I eventually made contact with the mill and bought in a lot of yarn. This was the beginning for the online store. After this I found other things I would like to sell, for example. Tanis Fiber Arts. I fell in love for the colors and think even that is really delicious.
The aim of the website is to offer what you do not get in a normal yarn shop. We have a lot of good Norwegian yarn, and it's all well and good. But I have missed variation. I hope I can bring more variety as time goes on.
Should you have any questions, please contact us.
Gurdeep has helped me a lot. He has set up the shop. He has negotiated with sellers. And he's been countless times to the post office to send off yarn. We strive to get the yarn off as quickly as possible, so it's been nice with a supporter. And he has not complained about all the yarn :-) Not very much anyway ;-).
There are some things I miss in my store, like drop spindles and stitch markers. Needles I expect to have in place before long.
Hope you like my store, and feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
